Wow! From the heat island of Phoenix to the towering (and I mean towering) mountains of Canada in terms of hours. Ian and I landed, got the rental car, and headed out of Calgary (mostly known for featureless landscape and Canadian cowboys). Then . . . everything started to go vertical.
I can’t count the times that we each said “wow, look at that mountain!” This is not something that we typically say in the USA.

Then the biggest surprise was being “accidental tourists”. Ian looked up the closest ice cream shop (a Chesnut thing) and the GPS landed us in the middle of a very busy resort town (think Aspen). Much to our surprise, it was Banff! I was expecting a city. Banff is not a city. But it has great ice creams and some of the best views in the world!

We ended the day with a local favorite “poutine” that is French fries with gravy and cheese curds. It goes very well with Canadian beer!
